In light of this recent article, I'm curious...

I didn't realize that so many people were opting out of vaccines.

I believe in vaccines. I also lived in a time where folks (like my grandparents) lived without vaccines as a child... polio, etc... were rampant and I'm happily all vaccinated and so is my child. I believe the good outweighs the bad.
However I did scatter my sons so he did not get any two live viruses (chicken pox/measles) at the same time. It was a good thing too becuase his first measles vax gave him measles exactly ten days later...

We vaccinated my son for some and not others.  The ones that we did vaccinate for I we spread out so that he didn't get them all at one time.
Read "The Vaccine Book" by Dr Sears.  It is a great one!  There are some pretty potent ingredients in vaccines.  There is a book called "Everything that you wanted to know about vaccines that your doctor won't tell you."  That is a little older, but still some great info.  Just make sure that you get the up-to-date info too...
I am not against vaccines all together.  There are some good ones out there and viruses that are potentially deadly to the little ones.  I just think that there are TOO MANY vaccines.  I mean, come on, I (and the rest of my family, friends, relatives, etc) had the chicken pox as a kid and we are all fine.  So, my son will not get the Varicella vaccine right now.  If he doesn't contract the disease himself by the age of 11 (contracting it can give you life long immunity as opposed to the vaccine that doesn't) then we will get him the vaccine.
I could go on and on and it is a very controversial subject.
Good luck!

My kids had almost all of the vaccines. They did not have the chicken pox vaccine. When they at the age to get it, the vaccine was just too new. I wasn't willing to accept all of the risks including having to have boosters. Both of my kids had chicken pox and though they itched, they both made it through just fine.

I did as Audrey.   I never got mine the chicken pox as it was to new at the time.  I never got the vaccine or the disease.  However, all four of mine got it one right after the other, and came through fine.

Nancy,

You had 4 kids with chicken pox and never got them? Are you CERTAIN you didn't have it as a kid?

Positive...my mom had five kids and she kept a chart of who had what when.  She was really anal about it.  The doctor thought maybe I built up some kind of immunity to it when all my brothers and sisters had it.  Who knows..I will probably get it when I am 80 and have grandchildren.

On the flip side, my big brother had it three times...
the docs back then said it was probably because he'd never had it BAD enough and his body didn't build up immunity.
Of course, we are all asthma, allergy, sensitive folk... so that could be it...

There are anamolies (sp?) either way.
